Can you claim Medicare rebates for counselling?

Patient Info Medicare

When you have bills and a tight budget, it might seem too expensive to consider professional psychological help to address problems adversely affecting your wellbeing, relationships or family stability.

Fortunately the Australian Government offers a number of programs designed to increase access to mental health care.

Better Access initiative

You might be aware of the government’s Better Access initiative which enables eligible people to receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions with a mental health professional.

Under the initiative you need to be assessed by a GP, who works with you to determine if you are eligible, and if so, to develop a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

You can then be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist to receive treatment to address your problems and improve your health and happiness. Depending on your clinical needs, you may be referred for up to six sessions.

At the completion of these initial sessions, you can return to your GP for a new referral, if required, to access an additional four sessions.

By choosing our practice, you can move seamlessly between a GP and the care of one of our qualified psychologists/psychiatrists. Communication and collaboration between your doctor and mental health professional will also be easier.

Support for disadvantaged people

Our practice is also registered through the Primary Health Network (PHN) to offer mental health services under the government’s Psychological Services Program (PSP), formerly known as ATAPS.

What is PSP? It’s very similar to the Better Access initiative, but it’s designed to support hard-to-reach members of the community that are experiencing disadvantage.

If you are eligible under the scheme, you can access sessions that can have a Medicare rebate applied: the Gold Coast PHN determines how many sessions, which may be up to six within a calendar year.

Our team is highly competent in diagnosing, referring and treating patients who need support and determining eligibility for programs that make addressing your mental wellbeing a more affordable option.
